Media Statement & Quote from World Courier on Decentralized Clinical Trial Project in Denmark

Expanding access to clinical trials is critical to advance promising new therapies, address disparities in healthcare and, ultimately, improve patient outcomes. World Courier, a part of AmerisourceBergen, is proud to be a part of an innovative new project, supported by the Innovation Fund Denmark, that aims to establish a national, public-private framework in Denmark to support the implementation of patient-centered decentralized clinical trials. Decentralized clinical trials can improve patient recruitment and retention and enable a broader range of patients to participate by bringing therapies and customized care directly into their homes.

As a global specialty logistics provider, World Courier has extensive experience in providing direct-to-patient (DtP) logistics services in markets worldwide, including Denmark. In fact, the company provided DtP logistics services in 75 countries in 2020. In its role in this project, World Courier will work alongside public and private partners to create and implement logistics strategies to reduce potential barriers and enable sustained, long-term success.

“Over the last two years, we have seen a significant increase in the number of clinical trials run in the home due, in part, to factors caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on the success of these trials, it’s clear that this approach is no longer an emerging solution—it’s a viable model to practice at scale,” said Andrea Zobel, PhD, senior director of Personalized Supply Chain at World Courier. “However, more widespread global use of this model will require more broad regulatory acceptance, as well as precise coordination among stakeholders at clinical sites, pharmacies and across the supply chain to ensure that medication is delivered on time, in the right condition and with the right documentation. We’re honored to participate in this project with partners from across the industry and will lean on our direct-to-patient logistics expertise and experience in Denmark to build a framework that allows more people to enroll and participate in clinical trials from their homes.”
